Pre-Spring Water Roundup

As spring slowly approaches, it’s not too soon to start thinking about water issues. The Denver Post ran a sharp editorial yesterday about some water legislation currently simmering in the state legislature. Rep. Josh Penry has introduced a bill to set up nine “water roundtables”? that would seek cooperative solutions to water-use challenges – an unusually level-headed idea, as Colorado water bills go. Wait, That’s *My* Title Insurance Company

Title insurance is one of those annoying, necessary-evil kinds of things that you never give a second thought from the moment you write the check to close on your house. But since I'm something of an afficionado of business scandals, I took a quick look at today's Denver Post story about a settlement involving kickbacks in the title insurance business. It seems that First American Title will pay $24 million to customers nationwide - and my foggy brain twitched suddenly and I realized that's *my* title insurance company. I called the Missoula office to see about my refund, which apparently could be $200-$350. My local agent knew nothing about it, but I imagine I'll be hearing from corporate soon. Update: Bob Sewell, director of operations for First American Title agencies in Montana, called and explained that First American Title operates in Montana mainly through agencies owned by an Idaho-based holding company called First American Title Holding Co., with First American Title Insurance functioning as the underwriter. So I probably don't get a refund.
