Last month the vernal equinox—the official start of spring—passed mostly unheeded here in the Garden City. There wasn’t much to note the passing from winter into warmer and happier climes. That’s because, here in Missoula, spring never really kicks off until late April with the arrival of Bike Walk Bus Week (BWBW). For the uninitiated, BWBW is Missoula’s version of Punxsutawney Phil: except instead of a groundhog, we celebrate the arrival of spring by commuting—to work, to school, running errands, whatever—by sustainable transportation for the week.
So let the celebration begin because Bike Walk Bus Week is here! But here’s the hitch: each day of BWBW (April 21st – April 28th) is so packed with great stuff, it’s tough to catch everything that’s going on. With bike festivals, the BIG Commuter Challenge (details below) and more free treats than you can shake a walking stick at, it’s a very busy week. For the super-ambitious, or the simply curious, you can check out the full calendar here. With some careful planning you might just be able to make it to everything!
For some of you, this BWBW thing is standard fare; been there, done that. You need something to keep you motivated. Well, if you’re gainfully employed here in the city, chances are good your business or organization is participating in Missoula in Motion’s BIG Commuter Challenge. The Challenge is designed to motivate employees to get in on the sustainable-commuting action by rewarding them with great prizes. Ask your supervisor at work to see if you’re signed up; if not, there’s always next year!
Now, we know what you’re thinking. Just a week to celebrate sustainable transportation? That’s no fun. We completely agree, which is why we’re glad to let you know you can celebrate sustainable transportation every day, 365-days a year. Walk or bike when the weather’s good and then when winter rolls back into town, you can hop on a Mountain Line bus or carpool on your way to work.
But wait, it gets better, and the prizes keep coming, too. By joining Missoula in Motion’s Way to Go! Club, it’s like Bike Walk Bus Week never ended. You continue your sustainable commuting and the Way to Go! Club will reward you for keeping up your commitment. It couldn’t be easier.
