Salt Lake City Upcoming Concerts: Clumsy Lovers, Impaler, Ted Leo, G. Love & Special Sauce

Lo-fi impressarios, wierd name, Elephant 6 cohort. Natch, Elf Power is my Pick O'the Week. Elf Power has maintained an uneasy balance between folk influences, psychedelia and sheer sonic experimentation, while keeping song structures intact. This is the experimental spirit at its best, not dabbling for its own sake but searching, in service of artful results. Also this week: Clumsy Lovers, Impaler, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, G. Love & Special Sauce

Salt Lake City Upcoming Concerts: Richard Buckner, Ice Cube, Step It Up, Type O Negative, Wolfmother

A little over a decade ago one of the most unique voices of the new alt-country emerged in the form of my Pick o'the Week, Richard Buckner, from San Francisco but very much in the Texas maverick mold. His throaty yet lyrical instrument was perfectly pitched to turn pain into poetry, his expression so highly individual and intimate that he can enunciate a word in a way that will make you wince and turn away, yet fans have come to anticipate for its raw, rough-edged beauty. Also this week: Ice Cube, Step It Up 2007, Type O Negative, Wolfmother

Salt Lake City Upcoming Concerts: John Vanderslice, the Long Winters, Limbeck

The Long Winters' John Roderick originally hails from Anchorage, Alaska, where there are some long winters indeed. But then it may be that extra hibernation that provides that time it takes to create the contemplative opus of an album by my Pick O'the Week. For those wondering if 'indie rock,' whatever that catch-all designation is worth by now, can survive and indeed thrive on into a second decade, the Long Winters show their rendition of it able to grow and advance.

Salt Lake City Upcoming Concerts: Alternative Press Tour, Apples in Stereo, John Scofield,The Locust

Apples have been a symbol of musical innocence lost and found as far back as the Beatles bequeathed their legendary label, so it’s fitting that Denver venture Apples In Stereo sprung from the same nomenclaturary tree, about a baker’s dozen years ago. In that span my Pick O'the Week has not only created its own unique pop inflection but spawned the musical collective Elephant 6, an astounding font of indie inspiration.

Salt Lake City Upcoming Concerts: Priestess, Dirty On Purpose, Agent Orange, Manchester Orchestra

There really is something orchestral about the Atlanta, Georgia band improbably named the the Manchester Orchestra. Their music is literate, songwriterly and mannered in a way that’s somehow refreshing, making them my Pick O' the Week. Also this week: Priestess, Dirty On Purpose, Agent Orange. Salt Lake City Upcoming Concerts: Badly Drawn Boy, Dead Meadow

I am a sucker for a fuzz pedal. The sci-fi lyrical base of my Pick o' the Week, Dead Meadow, demonstrates the point on the mythical map where stoner rock and good old-fashioned nerdity merge.

Salt Lake City Upcoming Concerts: Take Action Tour, My Chemical Romance, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum

You might have seem Sleepytime Gorilla Museum’s Nils Frykdahl here last Fall performing with Faun Fables' pagan-influenced folk. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is much more experimental, noisy and surreal, my Pick O' the Week for those adventurous enough to try it. Also this week: Take Action Tour, My Chemical Romance, Eric Clapton

Salt Lake City Upcoming Concerts: Spinto Band, Cobra Starship, Against All Authority, ICP

The Spinto Band may not readily come to memory’s call, but touring with band like Arctic Monkeys and We Are Scientists means that they’ve been in sight, if not ready recollection, of those who keep abreast of trends in new indie music. This group of Wilmington, Delaware twenty-somethings has been compared to Flaming Lips and Pavement, but I liken them more to the Shins, with that band’s lightly lilting sensibility, netting them my Pick of the Week. Also this week: Cobra Starship, Against All Authority, Insane Clown Posse.

Salt Lake City Upcoming Concerts: Pete Yorn, Gomez, Autumn Defense

How many times can ‘alt’ country music be rewritten and reformulated? In the hands of my Pick of the Week, John Stirratt and his band Autumn Defense, the answer is innumerable. The Wilco sideman dips into melodies and harmonies at will to create masterfully expressive works. Also this week: Pete Yorn, Drag the River, Gomez

Salt Lake City Upcoming Concerts: Ben Kweller, The Roots, The Shins

Sometimes the side project eclipses the main group. So it was with Albuquerque singer/guitarist James Mercer’s extracurricular effort the Shins. Their debutOh, Inverted World has since become one of the hallmark collections of early 2000’s indie rock, and my Pick of the Week continues to astound on their latest, Wincing the Night Away. Also this week: Ben Kweller, Clumsy Lovers, the Roots, Patty Larkin.
