The Return of Pickin’ and Grinnin’

Now, in this country music blog, I often pop off about how I don’t watch the country music videos or read the country music fan magazines or watch the country music award shows. But to be totally honest, there was a time when I did watch a couple of country music television shows… one was called Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters and the other was called Hee-Haw.

So I was just tickled pink to get the press release from out Nashville way that former Hee-Haw cast member Mike Snider is launching “Pickin’ & Grinnin’ with Mike Snider: A Grand Ole Comedy Revue” this summer.

The show takes its name from the segment of the old Hee-Haws where Buck Owens and Roy Clark would go back and forth with jokes and music. It’s entirely appropriate for Snider to revive the handle, given his status as having once held the title of Tennessee and National Banjo Playing Champion, and given that he’s built up quite a career of comedy country story-telling and funny songs, such as “The Fur Coat” and “Born to Shop.”

Mike Snider was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1990 by Minnie Pearl herself, and his new Pickin’ & Grinnin’ show will be a return to Studio A for Snider, where Hee-Haw was filmed some 20 years ago when he was a part of this classic piece of country Americana.

Magician Scott Cantrell will be a regular part of this summer’s revue show, and Snider referred to Cantrell when discussing the new show.

“We’re going to have a good time every time,” said Snider. “It’s going to be great to fill Studio A with some laughs and some good down home pickin’ again. And if a joke bombs, I’ll just ask the magician to make me disappear.”

Pickin’ & Grinnin’ runs this summer on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays at 4 p.m. Opry performances begin at 7 p.m. For more information, visit www.opry.com or www.gaylordentertainment.com
