Utah Plan Another One That Tackles Wilderness AND Development

Wilderness designation, habitat protection and land-use planning were once the independent, unrelated projects of single-minded bureaucrats. But all that is changing as more people jump into the fray of each, and they all become mixed together in true-to-the-word “comprehensive plans.” The latest such all-inclusive approach comes from Washington County, Utah, one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation and just a short drive from Las Vegas, which consistently tops the list of fastest growing cities in the nation. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that members of Utah’s congressional delegation, county commissioners, state and federal lawmakers, and to a lesser extent, conservationists, have pieced together a bill that sets aside 221,000 acres as wilderness, expands Zion National Park and protects habitat for the rare desert tortoise and the bear claw poppy.
