Not many performers give all of their profits to charity. But Hilary Thomas, founder of Lineage Dance, a Los Angeles-based modern dance troupe, not only choreographs and performs stirring routines with the six women in her company, she also donates the money from their shows to very worthy causes.
The Northern Rockies (and Missoula) is the company’s first stop on their national summer tour where they’ll be “dancing for a cure” by performing Healing Blue, a benefit concert for breast cancer.
Healing Blue, debuted with much acclaim last November in Pasadena, California, is inspired by the challenges and triumphs faced by seven women with breast cancer. This powerful performance brings together original music, videotaped interviews, and breath-taking contemporary dance. Lineage has been praised by the L.A. Times for its “soulful femininity” and “striking spatial configurations.”
As the stories unfold during the multi-media concert, the message is one of celebration and hope. Each concert will benefit a local organization dedicated to breast cancer prevention and research.
Lineage Dance was created by Hilary Thomas in 1999 to raise money for organizations nation-wide and to make the arts accessible to audiences of all demographic and socioeconomic backgrounds. During their 2003 and 2004 summer tours, Lineage dancers raised over $40,000 for charities in several cities, including Washington D.C. and Boston.
“We have had an amazing response to our tours, and are looking forward to making Healing Blue available to many different communities this summer,” says Thomas.
The first destination on Lineage’s tour is Missoula. Healing Blue is at 2:00 p.m. this Sunday, July 9 at the MCT Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $20, and all proceeds from the Missoula show will benefit the Montana Breast and Cervical Health Program, which works to reduce breast and cervical cancer among Montana women by providing screening services and education.
The Lineage dancers, fresh from Los Angeles, will also give a sneak preview of their award-winning choreography during Missoula’s Art Walk on Friday, July 7 th at Betty’s Divine on Higgins Avenue.
Other performances of Healing Blue in the region include: Moscow on July 14th, Yakima on July 15th, and Seattle on July 16th. Visit their website at www.lineagedance.org for more information.
